October 2, 2007 - FSX: 1 year after release When I look at the various flightsim sites and forums I can notice that FSX doesn't have the same success as its precursor FS9. The number of freeware add ons is rather scarce in comparison with FS9. After the release of FS9 many add ons which were formerly freeware became commercialized. Just think about Active Camera, FSUIPC, etc. This trend is now going on with the release of FSX. For instance, the formerly freeware AFCAD2 program by Lee Swordy is now, in a little more sofisticated form, payware. All this commercial add-on stuff readily leads to a significant investment if one wants to extend FS with new airports, aircraft, other add ons, etc. In this way the investment I made for FS9 is about twentyfold of what FS originally costed. However, all these investments are worthless whenever a new version of FS appear because Microsoft has the habit to release each time a new version which is to a large extent not backward compatible. And I don't even speak about the upgrade of your PC to let run the new FS smoothly. If one considers further the constant increase of the prices of the add ons (just think about PMDG who changed from one day to another the Dollar sign into the Euro sign) I think we had the best FS time behind the back. Moreover, a segment of enthousiastic simpilots has been left behind by Microsoft. All those that are making realistic IFR flights didn't find any significant improvement in the FSX version, because Microsoft lacked to upgrade its Artificial Inteligence (AI) engine. With missions in FSX, Microsoft has emphasized more the computer game aspect which strives to be as realistic as possible. The only result is that it turned out to be the most frame-rate eating game on the market. (see e.g. here ) Thanks, Bill, but, I couldn't care less.
